Why hip and foot mechanics matter

The knee sits between the hip and foot. Changes in hip control, foot position or ankle movement can alter how force travels through the knee.

This does not mean every knee problem is caused by the foot or hip. It means the system should be assessed together.

A sudden increase in running, jumping, hill walking, squatting or time on hard surfaces can exceed the knee’s current capacity.

Recovery is often about adjusting load and rebuilding tolerance rather than avoiding activity forever.

Local examination can include range, swelling, tenderness, ligament stability, meniscal signs and strength.

Traumatic injury, a pop, rapid swelling or inability to straighten the knee changes the urgency and likely pathway.

What a progressive plan may look like

A plan may include symptom management, gradual strengthening, hip and calf capacity, movement practice and a staged return to activity.

Manual care may be used when appropriate, but the long-term goal is usually stronger, more confident function.

Red flags and urgent knee symptoms

Contact urgent care if the knee is very painful, badly swollen, changed shape, cannot bear weight, locks, gives way or is hot and red with fever.

A major injury with deformity or loss of sensation requires emergency evaluation.
